Bermuda HealthCare Services (BHCS) presented veteran
Somerset cricketer Dion Stovell with the 2026 BHCS Bummy Symonds–Dennis Wainwright
Safe Hands Award, recognising his outstanding performance during the 2026 Annual Cup
Match Classic.
Stovell, who brought his Cup Match career to a close this year after making his debut as a
colt in 2006, played a significant role in Somerset’s emphatic victory over St. George’s. In his
final appearance in the Annual Classic, the veteran all-rounder scored 52 runs and finished
with match bowling figures of seven wickets for 67 runs.
This marks the second time Stovell has received the Safe Hands Award, having previously
won the honour in 2024. His second selection adds another distinction to a celebrated career
in cricket spanning two decades. Stovell captained the Bermuda team during the 2019 ICC
T20 World Cup qualifying campaign and has represented the country in numerous
international competitions. His selection for this year’s Safe Hands Award provides a stellar
conclusion to his sporting career.
The BHCS Bummy Symonds–Dennis Wainwright Safe Hands Award carries a $2,500 prize
and trophy and recognises outstanding performance and excellence during Bermuda’s Annual
Cup Match Classic.
The presentation at Bermuda HealthCare Services in Paget was attended by Vincent
Hollinsid, Administrator of the Award; Dr. Mahesh Reddy, BHCS Medical Director; Dion
Stovell, 2026 award recipient; Mrs. Valerie Symonds, wife of Calvin “Bummy” Symonds;
and Mrs. Natalie Wainwright, wife of the late Dennis Wainwright.

contribution to the game over many years.”
